Episode 16: Opening Day Cards

Hey everybody, we're back in action with some rare finds.

Chris knows a lot of people, and a lot of people know Chris, including a guy over at Know Knew Books in Palo Alto, CA. Chris stopped in one day and struck up a conversation with Bill, the owner (striking up conversations is one of Chris' finest talents...pronouncing baseball players' names...notsomuch). But Bill from Know Knew Books gave us some pretty cool cards. He had a complete set of 1988 Donruss, and an unopened box of 1990 ProCards AAA Minor League Baseball Cards.

Check it out as we each open a pack of these old school cards. Let us know if you know any of the players we opened. Did they make it to the bigs? Did they play for your team? Do you want their card? Are there any horse socks? Is anybody listening to me?

Thanks for tuning in!

I'd love a pack of those 1990 ProCards

Those ProCards are great. Looking at the checklist online there are a bunch of good majors leaguers in there. David Justice, Tino Martinez, Mo Vaughn, Juan Gonzalez...

I'd also love to open a pack.

Mark Leiter had a decent career. He is Al Leiter's brother. Here's one of my "Tales of Interest" for you. Mark and Al were supposed to start against each other when Mark was a Giant (I think) and Al was a Marlin. However it rained and the whole thing got messed up.

The Las Vegas Stars are now the Las Vegas 51's in honor of Area 51 and the Tidewater Tides became the Norfolk Tides. Minor league teams change names like Charlie Sheen changes women.

Hey, just a heads up the Clippers had been the Yankee affiliate until they took over the team in Wilkes Barre PA and changed the name from the Red Barrons to the Yankees. That was a sad day in my book.

Also, I think Mark Leiter went on to be a pitching coach in the majors in addition to what RPM said.

It is Bryan Towle. Also, I just got the Verlander you guys sent me. Great surprise, thanks!

I have a Denver Zephyrs hat and ball from when I was a kid. I think they left when the Rockies came in to town.

I also have some Dever Gold USFL gear.

Joe and Chris said...

Sweet Zephyrs gear Adrian. I need more minor league gear. Chris just needs more gear in general. I can't believe he calls himself a Red Sox fan and he only has like 3 sox shirts. You are more of a Zephyrs fan than Chris is a Red Sox fan, and the Zephyrs no longer exist.

Hey guys, received and opened my pack of ProCards! As you can imagine I know nothing of most of the players I pulled. I did pull a Mickey Morandini card though. I'm pretty sure he's the only one I pulled that made it to the majors. It was fun opening them! Thanks again!

No Problem, thanks for tuning in Bryan
