The Red Sox Will Make The Playoffs

It’s mid-September the bumbling Red Sox are 6.5 games out of the AL East and 6 games out of the wild-card. All hope is lost right? It’s been a bummer of a year – Pedroia, Youkilis, Varitek, Ellsbury, Beckett, Dice-K, etc etc they’ve spent more time nursing wounds than playing ball. But four days ago I made a prediction as you may see in the post below – I believe the Boston Red Sox will make the playoffs and the evil empire will sit this one out. Three reasons why the Red Sox will make the playoffs:

1. End of Season Schedule – Whoever laid out the schedule this year really wanted the last few weeks to count. In our final few weeks, the Yankees and the Rays play 3 more times and the Red Sox and the Yankees play 6 times. With the Rays just taking 2 out of 3 from the Yankees and the Red Sox sweeping their West Coast series with the Mariners the Sox are closing in. The Rays are dominant – they will win the AL East and while doing so, set the Yankees back a few more games and Boston will be on fire for it’s end of season series with the hated NY rivals. That final weekend series in October will be playoff level baseball and the Sox will rise to the challenge.

2. Young Studs – So you wanna play in the big leagues? The Red Sox lineup has been stocked with minor league wannabees all year and it’s starting to look like the Sox turned on their stud-finder at the right time. We’ll be seeing a lot of these guys in the next few years but they are about to leave their mark on New England with an end of season run like nobody would believe – Ryan Kalish, Lars Anderson, & Daniel Nava.

3. Pitching – These guys have stayed healthy, there’s been some Cy Young rumors all year and Lester, Bucholz, Lackey, Beckett, Wakefield, Dice-K & Paps are going to come through when we need them. There are some seasoned hurlers in that crew and the next few weeks are plenty of time to string a few wins together.

So you heard it here – an outlandish belief in the home team squd, but it's going to happen. Also keep an eye out for the unlikely hero JD Drew. The injury prone, moody outfielder is going to come through big. Enjoy the rest of the season and see you in late October! Let me know what you think - am I off my rocker, how do you feel about the Sox chances?

With ya buddy!!! Still not completely sure, but willing to go with it until proven otherwise. If they can gain 1-2 more in their other games, and take 5 or all 6 from NY,which would both be accomplishments but not HUGE ones considering the Yankee pitching staff is Sabathia and a bunch of minor leaguers right now.

Right on dudes. It's going to be exciting but I like our slim chances. Let's see if our pitchers can keep at it with the solid starts.

As a Sox fan transplanted to Tampa Bay...its been a tough year. Not only seeing the injury laiden Sox, but having to deal with the fair weather Rays fans supply me with their novice cheap shots at every turn. Yet, like all Sox fans, I keep the faith. The Yankees will NOT take the division, that's a no doubter. The Rays are providing a great "now or never" season that can not be stopped. (The core of the team will be gone via moneyball in the off-season, and Eva will never be able to do it on his own).
The fate of the Sox is in their own hands now. Its not over til its over.

Chris,
I like your predictions and right now they do still have a pretty decent shot. I don't know how it will fair out but it seems more likely that in a 3 way race they will just trade out games and the BoSox will be on vacation early. After reading this post though I had to do some research and realized that the NLC could still be a showdown since the Cards play the Pirates 6times, Cubs 3, and Padres 3. If Joe's Brewers can come to bat in their 6 games against the Reds and fall apart for the Astros and Padres we still might have a shot. Just need Molina to stand up to a batter again an the team get some momentum to their bats. WAINWRIGHT for CY YOUNG

Oh yeah! Those chances are looking real good now! HAHAH NOT! 8 games out with 14 to go isn't a pretty decent shot Josh, you dumb dumb. Like I said before, YANKEES = WORLD SERIES CHAMPS 2010

"Sabathia and a bucnch of minor leaguers", big toe problems, cheaters in the papers, Ace limited to 90 pitches cause of his groin and the fact that 10 of 13 are against TB and Boston. The NLE is even a stretch at this point. Even if they don't fall apart before the playoffs the WS is a bit to much to brag about. Nice job on the orioles. I think they have only been eliminated for a month.

yikes things are getting heated. It'll be interesting to see the conversation on this post in the next couple of weeks. 7 games back. 10 games against the rays and sox ahead. Fingers crossed.

you guys are seriously low in the iq department, the sox have no chance. even if the yankees or rays lose more games than they win in these final two weeks, the red sox would have to win practically ALL of their games at this point to make it in. 2 losses would even be too much.

the rays or yankees could even taunt the sAWx and just crawl over the finish line, as that's practically all they have left to do in order to make the playoffs.

If the rays or yanks win even 3 more games a piece in their respective remaining schedules, it's OVER.

boston won't even make 90 wins....

josh about those orioles. you seem to forget that their jobs actually depend on how well they play at this point, despite being far from the playoff hunt.
big ol' buck is in town and those guys know it's as easy as being cut from next year's roster if they don't show some professional level of play

Josh H. said...

Yeah I agree that they are still playing for their jobs but when you are playing at that level of baseball its sad. They are at .400 wins, rank in the bottom five of baseball and are 31 games behind in their division. If the Yanks are that great why would they play that bad against a bottom rung team like the orioles. Next are you going to say the royals are a quality win? You did go 4-3 against them this year. I wonder what the cards could do with another 110 mil. in payroll?

Anonymous said...

a high payroll does not imply championship success. it is neither necessary nor sufficient on its own to win it all.

but anyway, regardless of how the yanks performed against the orioles in the short term, the bottom line is over the long term of the season they've won the most. they are arguably the best team in baseball and at the very least in the top 3.

as for pitching: cc is gonna win the cy young, pettitte had a great first game back, hughes has finally leveled off as has burnett seemingly. the only pitching staff that would rival them on the way to the championship is the phillies'.

btw, the sox are DEFINITELY done at this point. no doubts. with one more loss they can't mathematically finish ahead of the yankees.

and the yanks may even clinch their playoff spot before ending their series with the rays.

sill y red sox fans, playoffs are for good teams

Id like to see the Reds making it deep into the playoffs. It would be nice to see a modern day big red machine plus I believe they have the bats and pitching arms to get it done.

shat UP about the reds no one cares about cincinatti

Yankees seems to be droping a few lately, maybe chris could be right and a yankee-less playoff could happen. They did start to come back but they looked pretty sloppy the first few innings. I guess they need CC to make them look good. And no one has cared abiut the reds since Pete Rose left baseball. Have you ever been to Cincinatti? Its a craphole of a town and make Omaha look exciting.

Bostons 7 gb and there kind of done...The Rays and Yankees are neck and neck and Bostons 7 1-2 gb in the wild card.

It's over!!!

it's been over for months; there was never any serious surge from the sox. they were usually hovering at 6 games back, sometimes as close as 3 or 4, and occasionally trailing by as many as 8. However, it was never within a day of turning the red sox way, they never could close the gap to that point.

I am fond of reading these past season moments. As I look back, I have the eery optimism for the Red Sox this year. Spring training is just around the corner so that is something to look forward to.
