Episode 8: Free Baseball Cards and 23 Year Old Gum

Baseball - Opening Day Cards #8 from chris andrew on Vimeo.

We are officially less than two weeks from Opening Day. Excitement is building. Pitching rotations are shaping up. Lineups are filling out. And we are still opening cards and handing them out.

Check out our 8th installment to see us open 4 packs, 2 of which we are giving away for FREE*

First we crack into some Upper Deck 2009 Series 2 from a Blaster Box (Chris was really hoping for an Autograph or Jersey card, so he is unwilling to part with these packs).

Next we open up some Topps 1987. A classic set of cards with the wood paneling background, and more mustaches than a Harley Davidson rally. Check out Joe's review of these cards on Amazon.com.

Oh, and did I mention that Chris nearly vomits after eating 23 year old bubble gum that comes in the packs of 1987 Topps? You have to see this.

* for a limited time, while supplies last, limit 1 card per person

hey Joe - I got curious and went to Amazon to look for your review of this set but could not find it. Maybe you should paste a link?

Its crazy that NEW sets of these old cards are still available for purchase! For people that collect for the heck of it, overproduction is no issue. But the mass overproduction of baseball cards diminishes their value and overall attractiveness. I don't think baseball cards make a good investment, but I also think that people's investment in the purchase baseball cards should be protected by the card companies. The fact that some of these old sets are still available for purchase speaks volumes in regards to their overkill print production. Card companies should limit their production numbers in any given year. This would preserve the market value of the cards that make it into the hands of a collector.

David,

Great show! I can't believe you guys have never gotten any jerseys cards. Some boxes of cards have one in every box. I got a Vernon Wells jersey card a few weeks ago. It's funny how the two good packs of upperdeck cards are the ones you aren't giving away.

What's up with all those other baseball card boxes in the room? Do you guys just go out and buy huge boxes?

I was gonna request the Mike Schmidt card but the guy above me commented like 2 minutes before I was going to comment. So instead could you guys send me the Dave Parker and either gum stained card? It doesn't really matter which, I just think it's interesting that the gum actually could stain the card. It sounded like potato chips when you guys ate it.

Thanks,
David

Yo Dan, thanks for coming back. That Mike Schmitt card is yours.

Hey Jesse, thanks for tuning in. There is a link to our profile on Amazon in the blog post. Click on the Amazon link above to read my review.

We totally agree with you. For a while there they just kept printing TONS of cards. So they aren't worth much. Then in the 90s there was just too many different types of cards. Lots of companies and lots of sets. I think its slimmed down as a few players left the card market. Lets see if this helps out collectors.

Thanks for tuning in and sharing!

David, the Dave Parker and a gum stained card are yours.

We took a break in our card collecting in between childhood and a few months ago...so we missed out on some of the new trends. You guys have to help us understand these things! Like Jersey cards and Autographs, those did not exist when we first started collecting.

Joe and Chris said...

Oh, and those extra boxes hanging out in the room...those are for you guys. We just haven't opened them yet!

Hehe I call dibbs on the commemorative patch card that is inserted in the Topps blasters. :)

I love this blog.

I am 31 and like you guys stopped buying baseball cards sometime in the late 80's. That 87 set is a blast from the past. I have just about every one of those in a box somewhere at my mom's house. I got reeled in by the cards your mom threw out promo and now I am hooked on the 2010 Topps set.

I have the whole base set and am working on completing the inserts now. There are so many gimmicks now it is hard to keep track of. The first time I got an original back CYMTO I was very confused. Had to email topps so they could explain it. :) I feel like "Unfrozen Caveman Baseball Card Collector"

Joe and Chris said...

RPM- thanks for coming back! Good luck on your Topps 2010 collection, hopefully we can help you find some of the inserts you still need.

That amazon review is great. It is true though, some of my first and fondest baseball card memories are with that wood grain boardered set.

Wait you swallowed the gum? Guys, I'm pretty sure there would have been more nutrition value had you just eaten the Ray Searage card.

Joe and Chris said...
