Fantasy Baseball Power Week: Episode 18 Opening Day Cards

We are mixing it up this week. Still FREE cards, but if you want to win these cards, you need to pick the best 3 player team in our first ever Power Fantasy Week. Here's how it works:
  1. Pick one infielder, one outfielder, and one pitcher from the cards we opened (see below for lists)
  2. You get 1 point for each win, save, home run, and RBI that your players record from Wednesday, April 14 through end of day Wednesday, April 21
  3. Post your picks in our comments
  4. The viewer who's 3 player team has the most points wins 2 of the 3 packs we opened (Joe's pack and the extra pack)
  5. The 2nd place viewer gets Chris' pack of cards
  6. We will find an awesome way of settling any ties, don't worry
Here are the players (note they may have changed teams in the offseason, you are selecting the player on whichever team they are on now):

Infielders
  • Russell Martin, C, LA Dodgers
  • Brian Buscher, 3B, Minnesota Twins
  • Micah Hoffpauir, 1B, Chicago Scrubs
  • Greg Dobbs, 3B, Philadelphia Phillies
  • JJ Hardy, SS, Minnesota Twins
  • German Duran, 3B, Texas Rangers
  • Adrian Beltre, 3B, Seattle Mariners
  • Jerry Hairston Jr., SS, Cincinnati Reds
  • Todd Helton, 1B, Colorado rockies
  • Albert Pujols, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals
  • Rafael Furcal, SS, LA Dodgers
Outfielders
  • Rick Ankiel, OF, St. Louis Cardinals
  • Nick Markakis, OF, Baltimore Orioles
  • Cody Ross, OF, Florida Marlins
Pitchers
  • Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals
  • Jared Burton, Cincinnati Reds
  • Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants
  • Kevin Gregg, Chicago Cubs
  • Scott Kazmir, Tampa Bay Rays
  • Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants
  • Bobby Jenks, Chicago White Sox
  • Justin Hampton, San Diego Padres
  • Ramon Ramirez, Boston Red Sox
Good luck!

Hey it's David again--

Sorry for such a lame comment I just wanted to get those picks in. This is a really great idea and it'll probably be a lot of fun, but what happens when the 3 outfielders are gone? So I guess I'm rooting against your Brewers because Pujols is on my Power Fantasy team. I think my team will do pretty good because I got to pick all the players I liked. Can't wait to see how it plays out!

Eric from Green Bay

Pujols
Markakis
Jenks

Well I'd be a fool to not choose Pujols, Markakis is easily the best of those outfielders, and I'm going to go with Wainwright for my pitcher.

Hi David, thanks for tuning in. Sorry I wasn't clear, but the players can be picked by multiple people, so someone could choose the same team as you, and we'd have to come up with a sweet tie breaker. Let's see how this goes, and let us know if you have ideas on how to make this better.

Oh my bad I was refreshing my page constantly so I could be first. Oh well, I'm still feeling good about my picks.

Wins should be worth more than saves because starters only pitch once or twice a week, but you never know how often a closer might pitch.

This is a great idea. It should be a lot of fun. I'm going to go with:

infielder: Pujols (no-brainer)
outfielder: Ankiel(taking a shot with him)
pitcher: Jenks (for the saves)

Pitcher-Tim Lincecum
Infielder-Albert Pujols
Outfielder-Nick Markakis

I will go with Wainwright, Ross, and Pujols.

As far as suggestions go: If I were you, I would add Ks which would help balance saves and wins (more save opportunities/week than win/opportunities for a reliever but more K opportunities for a starter)

Thanks for tuning in everyone! I looked up that Pujols card in Beckett, it says it is worth like $12. And I don't know how much that Tim Lincecum Gold Rare Starquest card goes for. Remember, pick your team before Wednesday!

TheBrooklynMet- That's a great idea about adding K's. We will have to add that in next time for sure!

Joe and Chris said...

Coach Cantu, I love you man. If I was eligible, I would have taken JJ Hardy as my infielder too. Such a streaky hitter and he is starting off HOT in Minnesota!

Looks like people think highly of Albert Pujols? I'm just glad he is done tearing through my Brewers. THE MACHINE! And he has Astros, Mets and DBacks in the stretch for our Fantasy Power Week. Is that a better matchup than Todd Helton vs. Mets, @ Braves (A), & @ Nationals?

Unknown said...

I went with Helton because I don't know if anyone will pitch to Pujols this week.

Steve said...

Id pick.

Beltre
Markasis
Jenks

After 2 days, we have 3 teams tied for the lead. With 4 points, the leaders are Daniel, TheBrooklynMet, and Joe! Their secret so far was selecting Cody Ross as their outfielder and Cody had a 3 RBI day today. You can track the action and see how you are doing in this google spreadsheet:

UPDATE: Yesterday the only Fantasy Power Points accumulated were by my man (and Coach Cantu's man) JJ Hardy, who had 2 RBIs. Coach moves into that 1st Place tie.

Teams in 1st: Daniel, Joe, TheBrooklynMet, Coach Cantu

Joe and Chris said...

UPDATE: Some serious fantasy points over the weekend...including a new twist. Pitcher Tim Lincecum gathered 4 points in one game by pitching for the win, and having 3 RBI! Good news for those of you with Tim Lincecum on your team. Also, Rick Ankiel had a big Saturday with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Our latest standings are:

1. Bennett (10 points)
2. David, Austin, Btubbs, Adrian, Troy, Jeff Andrew, and Mitchell (7 points)

Time to bust up some tie breakers! Competition ends after all games are complete on Wednesday.

Its David--

It should go in order of who commented first =)

Hey everyone, the first Fantasy Power week ended last night with a BANG! We had a clear leader but a total logjam for 2nd place before Wednesday. But the second place finisher came from deep down the list when Rafael Furcal rallied for 4 RBI on Wednesday. We'll have a new post with the full results and requesting some feedback on how to improve our Fantasy Power Week, but our winners are:

1st Place: Bennett
2nd Place: Travis

Congrats guys!
